Staff member Sicherheitsdienst Declaration

Witness 10

On March 29th 1946 in Amsterdam I interrogated : Otto Kempig, former SD official, domiciled in Timdorfstrasse 5, Hannover, presently in detention in Amsterdam.

He made the following declaration:
I served as an official at the SD’s Amsterdam office in the Euterpestraat from September 1940 to May 1945. I was particularly responsible for Jewish matters. I did not deal with the case you mentioned, otherwise I would certainly have remembered it. I find it hard to imagine that one or other SD official gave orders to the Dutch police to arrest Jews. They did this wherever possible on their own accord. It is also impossible that an SD official gave orders for the arrest of anyone without making himself known. With regard to the remuneration received for handing in Jews, this did indeed take place and ranged from 10 to 40 guilders. When the arrest of the Jew in question involved the confiscation of money or other properties, however, the informer was given 40% of the confiscated value. Dozens of Dutch and German officials worked at the SD’s offices in the Euterpestraat.
